Fatal crash Pc 'valued colleague'

A police officer who died when his motorbike collided with a bin lorry was a married father-of-two, South Yorkshire Police have said.

Pc Glen Howe, 48, was on duty when the accident happened in Prince of Wales Road in Sheffield on Friday afternoon.

The driver of the lorry, a 31-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but later released on bail.

A force spokesman said Pc Howe had been "a valued colleague".

South Yorkshire Police said Pc Howe joined the force in 1980 and lived in Sheffield.

Force tribute

He was married with a 20-year-old son and a daughter, 24.

Ch Supt Richard Wilson, the head of operational support services for the force, said: "This is a sad day for everyone in South Yorkshire Police.

"Glen was a valued colleague and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

"All our thoughts are with his family and friends during this very sad and tragic time."
