• At a time when we are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of global warming, (Poor planning ‘putting sinking cities at greater risk from sea-level-rises’, 5 October), this government gives permission for companies to go ahead with fracking for shale oil, a fossil fuel. And if you dare to protest peacefully, you risk a harsh jail sentence. • Having just returned from three weeks in France where all plastic bags are compostable – from supermarket use to market traders – I wonder why we, in the UK, are so far behind (Letters, 9 October)?Judith WrightDarwen, Lancashire• Having just returned from three weeks in France where all plastic bags are compostable – from supermarket use to market traders – I wonder why we, in the UK, are so far behind (Letters, 9 October)?Judith WrightDarwen, Lancashire
