A gunman has entered a synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and opened fire, police report. There are multiple casualties at a synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after a gunman opened fire during a service on Saturday.
Emergency services arrived at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue at about 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT). A service was taking place at the time. Three police officers are among those wounded. Police have not yet said how many people were killed.
There are multiple casualties, a police spokesman said, adding that three officers were among them. The man, who was injured in an exchange of gunfire with police, has now surrendered and is in custody. His name has not yet been released.
The gunman has now surrendered and is in custody but residents are still being advised to stay at home. Officers are still searching the Tree of Life synagogue.
A spokesman for the Pittsburgh Police Department, Jason Lando, said that officers were still carrying out searches at the synagogue in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighbourhood. Local residents are still being asked to stay at home.
Footage broadcast on US news channels showed a police Swat team and ambulances arriving at the scene. The synagogue serves the Squirrel Hill neighbourhood, which has one of the largest Jewish populations in Pennsylvania.
