Heathrow disruption after runway lights fault Heathrow disruption after runway lights fault
(35 minutes later)
Passengers are facing disruption at Heathrow Airport because of a problem with the runway lights. Passengers at Heathrow Airport have been warned a "technical issue" affecting lighting on the runways could impact their journeys.
An airport spokesperson said a technical issue was being investigated and disruption was anticipated throughout the morning. The airport said it was trying to fix the problem, but advised travellers to check their flight status with their airline before coming to the airport.
British Airways said in a statement that it was diverting flights due to arrive at Heathrow shortly and delaying flights which had not yet departed. Earlier passengers due to fly into Heathrow had been reporting that they hadn't been allowed to take off.
Passengers are being advised to check their flight status with their airline. Flights have since been landing at the airport this morning.
People on planes due to fly into Heathrow have been reporting that they haven't been allowed to take off. British Airways initially warned it was diverting some flights but it now says contingency plans have been activated and it expects to operate a full schedule - with some delays.
Heathrow operates at nearly 100% capacity, which means there is no space in the schedule to accommodate a number of delayed flights and so some services may need to be cancelled.
This will be agreed with air traffic control and the airlines operating at Heathrow, who will then pass this information onto passengers.
