Police hunting the killers of a Tyneside father-of-three, have questioned more than 500 people in a series of spot checks.

Keith Weightman, 48, died in hospital after being found with a single stab wound on 10 September in Gateshead.

On Sunday night - one week on from the killing - dozens of officers spoke to pedestrians, motorists, bus passengers and pub goers in the area.

Detectives say several new witnesses and fresh lines of inquiry emerged.

'Great success'

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Weightman, of St Cuthbert's Drive, Felling, had died from a single stab wound to the chest.

He had two grown-up daughters and a six-month-old son.

Det Ch Insp Roger Ford, who is leading the investigation, said: "I am delighted with the response we had from local people to the exercise.

"We spoke to more than 500 people and have potential new witnesses and a number of fresh lines of inquiry. It was a great success."

Detectives have been trying to piece together Mr Weightman's movements in the hours before he was killed.

Last week, police said they were looking for two men seen running from behind the shops where Mr Weightman was found.
