Three other people were also placed under formal investigation alongside Mr Rybolovlev. French reports say the Russian tycoon's lawyer handed prosecutors a phone recording as part of the case against Mr Bouvier. But when investigators looked at text messages on her phone they discovered material that allegedly revealed compromising material on a much bigger scale.
All the accused have been released while investigations continue, and all deny wrongdoing.
