Sean Wells, from the fire service, said on Saturday evening the decision to evacuate homes was made "due to the presence of commercial cylinders". Twyford Street, Harriet Street, Grove Street and Normanton Road remain closed.
He added residents would be told when they could return home, which would be once firefighters were satisfied the cylinders posed no risk.
A refuge centre was set up for those families affected at St Augustine's Church, Upper Dale Road.
