(about 2 hours later)
Law enforcement agencies in Brussels are investigating the Tuesday knife attack on a police officer as a possible act of terrorism, the media reports. Law enforcement agencies in Brussels are investigating the Tuesday knife attack on a police officer in a terrorist context, officials told local media.
The Brussels prosecutor’s office told Interfax that the investigation into the attack was being conducted as “an attempted murder in the context of terrorism.” A similar comment from the city’s police was cited by RIA Novosti. “The authorities haven’t yet been able to establish the motive of the attacker,” Ine Van Wymersch, a spokesperson for the prosecutor said. She added that a judicial investigation for attempted murder in a terrorist context has been opened.
“Witnesses heard him shouting 'Allahu Akbar',” she explained to the media.
The suspect attacked a police officer in the Belgian capital on Tuesday morning before being shot by another officer. Both the attacker and his intended victim were brought to hospital. Neither of their lives are reported to be under threat.

Earlier, a knife-wielding man attacked a police officer in the Belgian city before being shot by another officer. Both the attacker and his intended victim were brought to hospital. Neither of their lives is reported to be under threat. The media identified the suspect as Issam T., a Belgian national born in 1984. He was recently released from a psychiatric hospital for people who commit crimes. The man was indicted for a series of violent robberies. Back in 2014 he was also reportedly detained for an attempted manslaughter and possession of forbidden arms.
Earlier on Tuesday Interior Minister Jan Jambon said that the suspect had not been known “neither by police, nor by the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis Center (OCAM)” for his alleged links to terrorism. Police were “once again the victim of a cowardly attack,” the minister tweeted.
On Tuesday afternoon police in the Ixelles area where the attack happened, reportedly carried out a search in the alleged perpetrator’s house. At least two men were arrested following the operation.
