An Irish man who was stabbed to death in France on Wednesday has been identified as John Dowling. An Irishman has been stabbed to death in Paris in France.
The 66 year old had worked as an English language teacher in Paris. John Dowling, 66, was attacked at about 12:00 local time on Wednesday outside the city's Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci in the business district of La Défense.
He was stabbed several times in front of the city's private Pôle Léonard de Vinci university in the La Defense business district, where he taught. Mr Dowling was an English language teacher at the private school and had worked there since 1999.
The attacker is understood to have been Pakistani man who is believed to have been excluded by the university last year. It is understood his attacker was a former student who was excluded in August 2017.
The French Higher Education Minister Frédérique Vidal posted on Twitter that there was indignation at the killing. The school said Mr Dowling was a much-loved teacher who showed great compassion and made himself available on a daily basis to his students.
She said that a police investigation would reveal what happened and that a team of psychologists will attend the university on Thursday. It said it was profoundly shocked and saddened by Mr Dowling's death and offered its sympathy to his family and friends.
Counselling support is being offered to all of those affected by his killing.

Police have started an investigation into Mr Dowling's death.
