Miss Universe has yet to publicly acknowledge the controversy. The preliminary rounds of the competition get underway on Thursday and the winner will be crowned on Sunday. Summers issued an apology on her Instagram Thursday morning. “In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize,” she wrote, adding that she would be “grateful” for an opportunity to discuss the matter with Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodia. Presumably not in English.
Summers’ mother also weighed in on the controversy, claiming her daughter’s comments were taken out of context and that she “doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.”
The preliminary rounds of the competition get underway on Thursday and the winner will be crowned on Sunday.
