Earlier, the commander of the UN mission, Brazilian Maj Gen Carlos dos Santos Cruz, said it appeared as if the school had been hit by an earthquake. Specialist rescue teams from the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, and the US are on their way to Haiti to help.
