Thirteen men have appeared in court via video-link in connection with an alleged plot to blow up airliners.

The 13 spoke only to confirm their names and were remanded to appear again at the Old Bailey on 27 October.

Police moved in August to thwart a suspected plot to bring down planes travelling from the UK to the US.

The men are being held at Belmarsh high-security prison in south-east London.

Eight are charged with conspiracy to murder and a new offence of preparing acts of terrorism on 21 August.

They are: Umar Islam, 28, from east London; Waheed Zaman, 22, from Walthamstow, east London; Abdul Ali, 25, from Walthamstow; Tanvir Hussain, 25, of no fixed address; Arafat Khan, 25, from Walthamstow; Ibrahim Savant, 25, from north London; Assad Sarwar, 26, from High Wycombe in Bucks; and Adam Khatib, 19, from Walthamstow.

Three others, charged with the same offences on 29 August, are: Nabeel Hussain, 22, of Chingford, east London; Mohammed Gulzar, 25, of Walthamstow; and Mohammed Uddin, 35, of Stoke Newington, north London.

Two more men were charged on 7 September with preparing acts of terrorism.
