Engineers have restored pressure to a main gas supply pipe in Devon after it was seriously damaged, leaving thousands of homes without gas. Repairs have been completed to a mains gas supply pipe in Devon after it was seriously damaged on Friday, leaving thousands of homes without gas.
Earlier a number of households in Torridge had their supply disconnected. More than 2,000 households in Torridge were affected by the incident, with many having their supply disconnected.
Energy supplier, Wales & West Utilities, said that following work, enough pressure had now returned to the local network to make it operational. A Wales & West Utilities spokeswoman said engineers were restoring supplies as quickly as possible.
However, the company urged people to use gas sparingly as gas pressure was not yet up to "normal" levels. People are advised not to switch their supplies back on, but to arrange for engineers to carry this out.
A spokeswoman said that from 0800 GMT on Saturday the gas supply would be restored to people whose homes had been temporarily disconnected. "We regret the inconvenience, which resulted from third party damage to a gas main," the spokeswoman said.
She advised householders who had switched off their own gas supply not to attempt to turn it back on themselves but to call one of the company's engineers .
"We regret the inconvenience, which resulted from third party damage to a gas main," she said.
