| Gray wolves have been protected since the 1970s, after ranchers and governments enacted programs to kill the predators to protect livestock. At their lowest numbers, only a few hundred remained in the contiguous US. There are now more than 6,000 gray wolves in the lower 48 states, with more in Alaska where the species was not listed as endangered, according to the US government. The iconic species was already delisted in the Northern Rocky Mountains. | |
