UUP officers agree on Tory move UUP agrees on Conservative pact
(about 4 hours later)
Ulster Unionist Party officers have agreed to propose a partnership with the Conservative Party. The Ulster Unionist Party has agreed to form an electoral pact with the Conservatives.
The proposal will be put to the Ulster Unionist Executive on Thursday evening. The deal will initially see the parties run on a joint ticket in Westminster and European elections in Northern Ireland.
It would involve the two parties setting up a Conservative-Ulster Unionist Joint Committee. Representatives from both parties will also form a joint committee to work out an electoral strategy.
This would agree issues such as joint candidates at elections in Europe and Westminster. The name of the new partnership has yet to be agreed. A UUP spokesman said its executive committee had "overwhelmingly endorsed" endorsed the decision.
