Restaurant bomber case adjourned Nail bomber blames 'war on Islam'
(about 1 hour later)
The sentencing of a Muslim convert who launched a failed suicide nail bomb attack in a restaurant has been delayed amid concerns about his mental health. A failed suicide nail bomber left a note blaming the "disgusting" behaviour of Britons and the "war on Islam" for his attack, a court has heard.
Nicky Reilly, 22, from Plymouth, last month admitted attempted murder and preparing an act of terrorism at Exeter's Giraffe restaurant on 22 May. Nicky Reilly, 22, from Plymouth, last month admitted attempted murder and preparing an act of terrorism at Exeter's Giraffe restaurant in May.
But he has since told psychiatrists that he had wanted to be a terrorist since 2003, the Old Bailey was told. The Muslim convert's note insisted he was not "brainwashed or indoctrinated".
Sentencing was delayed to allow doctors to assess his mental state. On Friday, a court put back Reilly's sentencing until 30 January to allow doctors to assess his mental state.
Defence barrister Kerim Fuad told Mr Justice Calvert-Smith the outcome could affect the length of sentence he passed. Defence barrister Kerim Fuad said several doctors were concerned that Reilly's extremist views, which had appeared to have dissipated, could be triggered again in the future.
Mr Fuad said he had spoken to several doctors and there was concern that Reilly's extremist views, which appeared to have dissipated, could be triggered again in the future. The court heard how dozens of customers fled in panic when three soft drink bottles exploded in the restaurant's toilets on 22 May.
Badly injured Reilly had intended to run out into the packed dining area but could not open the toilet cubicle door. The caustic soda devices detonated in his hands, leaving him badly injured.
The court was told of how dozens of customers at the Giraffe restaurant in Exeter, Devon, fled in panic when three soft drink bottles exploded in the toilets. Reilly, of King Street, Plymouth, has learning difficulties and Asperger's syndrome and police said after his conviction he had been "preyed upon and radicalised by others".
Reilly had intended to run out into the packed dining area clutching the caustic soda bottle bomb to his stomach, the court heard. But the court heard that his red ink note said: "I have not been brainwashed or indoctrinated. I am not insane." When you are getting drunk on Friday and Saturday night your behaviour is worse than animals Nicky Reilly
But he could not open the toilet cubicle door in the seconds after he set the bomb to explode. Instead, Reilly claimed he was simply doing "what God wants from his mujahideen".
The delay caused the volatile nail-filled device to detonate in his hands, leaving him badly injured. His note attacked drunkenness and sexual immorality as well as the treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and Iraq's Abu Ghraib jail.
Reilly, of King Street, Plymouth, has learning difficulties and Asperger's syndrome. It read: "In the name of God most gracious, most merciful: why I did it.
Officers said he used the internet to research how to make bombs using caustic soda, kerosene and nails. "Everywhere Muslims are suffering at the hands of Britain, Israel and America. We are sick of taking all the brutality from you.
Reilly also considered bombing Charles Cross Police Station, Plymouth's Drake Circus shopping centre and Devonport Dockyard. "You torture and destroy Muslim lives by taking a father or a son or a brother, even you torture Muslim women.
Police said after his conviction he had been "preyed upon and radicalised by others". "In Britain it's OK for a girl to have sex without marriage and if she gets pregnant she can get an abortion so easily.
"When you are getting drunk on Friday and Saturday night your behaviour is worse than animals.
"You have sex in nightclub toilets. You urinate in shop doorways. You shout your foul and disgusting mouth off in the street.
"It is unacceptable to Allah and the true religion Islam."
'Dangerous nonsense'
Describing his client as the least sophisticated person to have been charged with terrorism, Mr Fuad said Reilly "lacked cunning" and should be made the subject of an interim hospital order.
Reilly had been influenced by others on the internet, said Mr Fuad, who added: "Their input has fed and fuelled the dangerous nonsense that filled his head."
But prosecutor Stuart Baker said Reilly "became interested in jihad at an early stage".
"He himself, alone, wanted to be a terrorist. He told doctors he was interested in terrorism from June 2003," said Mr Baker.
Reilly changed his name to Mohammad Rashid Saeed Alim in 2004 in tribute to the 9/11 New York suicide attackers.
Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said the 11-month delay a hospital order could bring about was out of the question.
He said anything other than a long-term of incarceration in a secure institution was not possible, and ordered reports be drawn up by two psychiatrists.
