LONDON — The police in Northern Ireland said on Saturday that they had arrested two people in connection with the killing of Lyra McKee, a journalist who was covering a night of violent unrest in Londonderry on Thursday.

“Major Investigation Team detectives have arrested two men, aged 18 and 19 under the Terrorism Act, in connection with the murder of Lyra McKee in the Creggan area of Derry on Thursday, 18th April,” the Derry City and Strabane district police wrote in a statement on Twitter.

On Friday the police had announced that they were attributing Thursday night’s violence to the New Irish Republican Army, a militant group unaffiliated with the Provisional Irish Republican Army, which renounced violence in 2005.

The violence came on the 21st anniversary of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement that brought an end to decades of violence between republicans, mainly Roman Catholic, who want Northern Ireland to join Ireland and mainly Protestant unionists who want it to remain British.

Ms. McKee’s killing was condemned by politicians on both sides of the divide and the leaders of Britain and Ireland.
