To the Editor:

Regarding your May 19 Sunday Business article about Facebook’s toxic content, it’s no small task ahead of Facebook to refine artificial intelligence to curtail violent and inappropriate content. But we’re all counting on the company because there is no substitute for what it has created.

For many, it’s not about keeping up with second cousins or distant classmates, but rather that many of us have come to rely on private Facebook groups for life-changing business and parenting advice, or for support with chronic illness or mental health issues.

While the social network is much maligned for making us less connected face to face, in groups we’re able to find people anywhere in the world with common challenges and to support one another. We’re counting on you, Facebook, to figure this out!
