On Politics: Trump Blows Up Meeting With Democrats
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/23/us/politics/trump-pelosi-democrats.html Version 0 of 1. Good Thursday morning. Here are some of the stories making news in Washington and politics today. _____________________ • President Trump abruptly blew up a meeting with Democratic congressional leaders on Wednesday, declaring that he could not work with them until they stopped investigating him and lashing out at Speaker Nancy Pelosi for accusing him of a “cover-up.” • The White House meeting was only Ms. Pelosi’s second most important meeting of the morning. Seeking to head off a growing revolt by House Democrats, she also convened an all-hands meeting to sell her members on her strategy of exhausting all avenues before taking up impeachment. • The Justice Department has agreed to begin honoring a subpoena for intelligence materials related to the special counsel’s investigation, staving off Democratic action to try to force compliance. • New York State lawmakers approved a bill that would clear a path for Congress to obtain Mr. Trump’s state tax returns, injecting another element into a tortuous battle over the president’s refusal to release his taxes. • For the first time, there are three Asian-American and Pacific Islanders seeking a major party’s nomination for president. One in particular, Andrew Yang, has embraced the strategy of using his Asian ethnicity and identity to appeal to voters nationwide. • Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s presidential campaign introduced a proposal called the “Family Bill of Rights,” aimed at investing heavily in maternal and child health, adoption and in vitro fertilization, paid family leave and universal prekindergarten. • A top Democratic official on Wednesday canceled a planned fund-raiser for an anti-abortion congressman that had prompted an outcry among progressives, raising the question: Is there room in the party for lawmakers who oppose abortion? • The Pentagon said on Wednesday that it would build temporary housing along the southwestern border for 7,500 migrant adults facing deportation, responding to a surge in undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers. • For the first time in years, there’s a glimmer of hope for lawmakers intent on repealing the authorization of military force passed after the Sept. 11 attacks, which has been stretched to justify open-ended warfare. • The Trump administration announced an ambitious goal in March: It wants to send American astronauts back to the moon in just five years. But, for a number of reasons, it is unlikely that astronauts will set foot on the moon during his projected time frame. _____________________ Were you forwarded this newsletter?
