Trump to Democrats: Stop the Investigation if You Want Legislation
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/23/opinion/letters/trump-democrats-investigation.html Version 0 of 1. To the Editor: Re “Rebuking Pelosi, Trump Condemns ‘Phony’ Inquiries” (front page, May 23), about President Trump’s refusal to discuss legislation until the Democrats drop their investigations: While it is true that the Republicans currently in office can only manage one track at a time — the “protect the president at all costs” track — Democrats are far more capable. Even with much attention focused on investigations, they have still managed to pass legislation on consumer financial protection, gun control and health care, even as they work on a bipartisan repeal of the 2001 authorization of military force. Perhaps if President Can’t-Walk-and-Chew-Gum-at-the-Same-Time spent less time watching TV and tweeting, he, too, could manage more than one track at a time. Jesse AllenSanta Fe, N.M. To the Editor: The real constitutional crisis is coming. When President Trump’s appeals to quash the subpoenas from House Democrats reach the level of the Supreme Court, it is very possible that if the ruling is 5 to 4 against him, he will ignore it and refuse to honor the subpoenas. In such a case, the rule of law will be in jeopardy and the country will be irrevocably split. That is why it is imperative for the Supreme Court to unanimously rule against Mr. Trump as it did in United States v. Nixon, when it ordered the president to deliver subpoenaed materials to a federal court. Mr. Trump is not above the law. George Magakis Jr.Norristown, Pa. To the Editor: Democratic leaders accuse Republicans of obstructing their ability to govern, yet they are the ones who have spent the first two years of President Trump’s term on an inquiry that turned up nothing and now may spend the next two years on impeachment proceedings that will fail. It is not lost on anyone that their sole political focus is to oust the president. This will please the Trump haters among their base, but there will be no small number of moderate Democrats and independents, quieter because they aren’t on Twitter all day, who would prefer that their representatives do what they elected them to do — make and enact policy. Margaret McGirrGreenwich, Conn. To the Editor: Note to Speaker Nancy Pelosi: You insult the man after you have seen him and got what you wanted, not before. Of course President Trump is guilty of a cover-up, but couldn’t you have waited until the infrastructure deal was sealed before accusing him? Don’t let those screaming, inexperienced big-mouth freshmen get you to do what deep inside you know is not right. Keep your cool. Carla WallachGreenwich, Conn. |
