Anti-Semitism: Here, Now
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/28/opinion/letters/anti-semitism-europe-united-states.html Version 0 of 1. To the Editor: Re “German Official Advises Jews Against Wearing Skullcaps” (news article, May 27) and “Anti-Semitism Rises Anew in Europe” (editorial, May 27): So it has come to this. Seventy-four years after the Allied victory in World War II brought the Holocaust to an end, the slogan “never forget” has morphed into “never forget to hide your skullcap.” Make no mistake: This phenomenon is not limited to Germany or Europe, as Jews easily identified by their appearance and apparel are attacked on the streets of New York City and elsewhere in this country. Encouraged by politicians who, like Donald Trump, are inclined to see “very fine people, on both sides,” as well as European politicians like Jeremy Corbyn of Britain and Viktor Orban of Hungary, anti-Semitism that long smoldered beneath the surface has been given legitimacy and its proponents a license to participate openly in our political discourse. Sadly, as we have seen before, the world, including people of all faiths and ethnicities, is the worse for it. Jay N. FeldmanPort Washington, N.Y. |
