A man is missing after a young woman suffered serious injuries in a knife attack in York.

Police found the 20-year-old woman suffering from knife wounds to her body after they were called to a property in Lowther Street at 0650 GMT.

She was taken to York District Hospital where her condition was described as "very serious".

Police want to trace Steven Maillard, 26, who is believed to have driven towards Teesside in the woman's car.

Officers say anyone spotting Mr Maillard should not approach him, but should alert the police immediately by calling 999.

Travelling north

Mr Maillard, who is believed to be Swiss, speaks English with an accent.

He is described as white, with short black hair and muscular build. He was smartly dressed, North Yorkshire Police said.

A police spokesman said: "It is believed that he is in possession of the female victim's car - a purple Ford Ka which has the registration number M15 UTL."

The car was spotted travelling north on the A19 towards the Teesside area at about 0820 GMT.
