Two men seriously injured after being shot by police in Victoria Two men shot by police in Victoria were 'of interest to counter-terror unit'
(about 2 hours later)
Two men have been taken to hospital with serious injuries after being shot by Victorian police near the New South Wales border. Two men of interest to counter-terrorism police have been shot and seriously wounded by officers near the Victoria-New South Wales border.
The men were shot after police tried to intercept a vehicle near a campground at Barnawartha North near Albury-Wodonga at about 3pm on Wednesday. Counter-terrorism officers were in north-eastern Victoria on Wednesday gathering intelligence when they sought assistance from local police to locate two people.
The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting were still being established but police say there was no threat to the public. Local officers attempted to intercept a vehicle containing two men on Old Barnawartha Road, near Richardsons Bend campground near Albury-Wodonga at around 3pm.
Ambulance Victoria was unable to provide details about the men’s injuries or the hospital they were taken to. Victoria police said the vehicle rammed the police car and both men got out of the car armed with weapons, believed to be an axe and a knife.
One of the men moved towards the officers and he was shot.
Police then tried to negotiate with the second man but he refused to put down his weapon. He was sprayed with capsicum spray and tasered but when neither had any effect he was also shot.
Both men, aged 19 and 30, have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police said the incident was not being treated as a terrorism-related attack and there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Homicide detectives will investigate the shooting, with oversight from professional standards command, as per standard protocol in a police shooting.
