Girl, 12, dies in M61 hit-and-run in Bolton Girl, 12, dies in 'tragic' M61 hit-and-run in Bolton
(about 5 hours later)
A 12-year-old girl has died in a hit-and-run crash on a motorway. Arrests have been made over the hit-and-run killing of a 12-year-old girl on a motorway.
Sana Patel, from Blackburn, died on the M61 in Bolton when the Nissan Qashqai she was travelling in was in a crash with a Vauxhall Corsa at about 22:45 BST on Saturday. The victim, named by police as Sana Patel, of Blackburn, died at the scene on the M61 in Lancashire.
Lancashire Police said the Vauxhall occupants "fled the scene on foot". She was a passenger in a Nissan Qashqai, which was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on Saturday at about 22:45 BST.
Supt Andy Cribbin said the car was registered to an address in West Yorkshire and appealed for anyone with information to contact them. The crash happened on the northbound carriageway between junction eight and Bolton West/Rivington services.
"We are appealing for the driver and any passenger at the time of the collision to make contact with us as soon as possible," he said. Lancashire Police said a 23-year-old woman from Mirefield, Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
"A 12-year-old girl has tragically lost her life, so we would urge them to search their conscience and do the right thing by contacting us." A 28-year-old man from Dewsbury was also detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. Both remain in custody.
Five other people travelling in the Nissan suffered minor injuries. The crash happened on the northbound carriageway between junction eight and Bolton West/Rivington services.
The M61 was closed in both directions between junctions six and eight for investigations, and reopened earlier on Sunday. The force said five other people in the Qashqai suffered minor injuries, while those in the Corsa fled the scene on foot.
Det Supt Andy Cribbin said: "This was a tragic incident in which 12-year-old Sana Patel lost her life and our thoughts are very much with her family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time.
"There are no words to describe what they will be going through and we send them our deepest condolences.
"We have now made two arrests but are very much still trying to establish what happened and are asking anybody who saw the collision or either vehicle in the moments before it happened to get in touch as soon as possible."
