DNI Coats creates new election security position
Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats announced he has created a new position specifically aimed at addressing concerns over election security.
Longtime intelligence community veteran Shelby Pierson will serve as the first election threats executive. “Election security is an enduring challenge and a top priority for the IC (intelligence community),” Coats said. “In order to build on our successful approach to the 2018 elections, the IC must properly align its resources to bring the strongest level of support to this critical issue. There is no one more qualified to serve as the very first election threats executive than Shelby Pierson, whose knowledge and experience make her the right person to lead this critical mission.”
Coats’s announcement came weeks after the House passed a bill, mostly along party lines, to strengthen election security for the 2020 race. Many lawmakers, most of them Democrats, have expressed concern that Russia may once again attempt to interfere with the presidential election.
But Coats’s news provided a fresh reminder of why he has repeatedly clashed with Trump, who has consistently sought to downplay the effect that Russian election interference had on the 2016 results.

“Antifa is a group of hateful, intolerant radicals who pursue their unhinged agenda through aggressive violence,” Cruz said of the anti-fascist group. “The hate and violence they spread must be stopped, and I am proud to introduce this resolution with Senator Cassidy to properly identify what Antifa are: domestic terrorists.”
The resolution conveniently comes as Trump is characterizing the four House Democrats known as “the Squad” as “Radical Left Congresswomen.” But the Houston Chronicle notes that the Southern Poverty Law Center does not classify Antifa as a hate group.

Donald Trump has kicked off the morning by accusing the media of stirring up controversy over the racist “send her back” chant at his North Carolina rally, even though a number of Republicans publicly criticized the attack on Representative Ilhan Omar.
