http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/7782979.stm Version 0 of 1. If you're planning a break in Europe then there's very little on the front pages to cheer you up. The papers seize upon the government's acknowledgement that it isn't going to step in protect the pound. The Independent reckons sterling will soon be worth less than the Euro and warns this will hit holidaymakers hard. The Daily Telegraph leads with an interview with the chief executive of Barclays who warns house prices are to fall by a further 15% next year. Protest injuries The Guardian has been taking a closer interest in the injuries suffered by police during a confrontation with climate change protesters last August. Officers numbering 1,500 were used to protect the Kingsnorth power station in Kent and at the time it was reported 70 were injured. But a Freedom of Information inquiry revealed it was actually 12 and that none had been caused by protesters. Instead, the paper tells us, one of those officers was stung by a wasp. Bride's drama Many of the papers pick up on the tale of bride-to-be, Sophie Clarke, whose wedding day was ruined in dramatic style as she ended up in hospital. She was heading to the Church in Bretforton in Worcestershire in a horse and carriage. But the horse bolted, the driver and his assistant fell out and Miss Clarke was pitched over the edge. She tells the Sun she was saved by her father's quick thinking and her wedding dress which cushioned the fall. Kathy Staff There are warm words for Kathy Staff, Nora Batty in "Last of the Summer Wine," whose death was announced on Sunday. The Daily Telegraph says she made the role "a comic triumph, turning Nora Batty into perhaps the greatest single icon of the series". But away from the wrinkled stockings, the obituaries reveal that Kathy Staff was a very different character to the northern battleaxe she portrayed. The Daily Express says she needed prompting to show Nora's tough edge. |
