(about 1 hour later)
At least one person was injured when a gunman opened fire on Tuesday outside Ridgway High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., the police said. A gunman opened fire on Tuesday near a high school in Santa Rosa, Calif., injuring at least one person before fleeing onto the school campus, the police said. A suspect was taken into custody after a brief manhunt.
A possible suspect was detained and the authorities were searching for a weapon, the Santa Rosa Police Department said on Twitter. A 17-year-old victim showed up at a nearby trauma center with a gunshot wound to the abdomen shortly after the shooting at Ridgway High School, Capt. John Cregan of the Santa Rosa Police Department said at a news conference. The victim, whose name he did not provide, was in stable condition.
“No further reports of violence on the school campus,” the department said in a statement. The search for the gunman led the authorities to place Ridgway High School and two other schools Santa Rosa High School and Santa Rosa Junior College on lockdown, Captain Cregan said.
The police said three schools in the area had been placed on lockdown while officers searched for the gunman: Ridgway High School, Santa Rosa High School and Santa Rosa Junior College. “It is important to reiterate the facts,” Captain Cregan said. “There was never an active shooter on the campus, the incident occurred off the school campus, there was no violence that occurred on the school campus.”
He said that after the suspect was detained, the police continued to search for the handgun that had been used in the shooting. The school lockdowns were lifted shortly after the suspect was detained, the Police Department said.
“Police conducted a thorough sweep of the campuses,” the department said on Twitter. “There is no evidence that the weapon is on campus. The suspect is in custody & there is no threat. Students will remain on-campus & continue with their regular schedule.”
