Lothian and Borders Police said the accident happened on the A68 near Pathhead at about 0815 GMT on Saturday. John Thomson, 40, from the Loanhead, near Edinburgh, and Peter McEwan, 50, from Chester-le-Street, Durham, died in a head-on collision on the A68.
Passengers had to be cut from the wreckage. One woman and four men were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and one is said to be seriously injured. Lothian and Borders Police said the accident happened at about 0815 GMT on Saturday.

Colin Shillito, an inspector with the force's road policing branch, said: "It's too early to say what contributed to the crash. Police said a southbound Vauxhall Zafira and a northbound Nissan Almera collided near the junction with the A6093.
Long journey Mr Thomson was a passenger in the Vauxhall, while Mr McEwan was a passenger in the other car.
"We're still talking to the parties that were in the vehicles at the hospital." A number of people had to be cut free from the wreckage and the road was closed for four and a half hours.
