Bristol has been selected as one of the World's top 10 cities to visit in 2009 by a travel book publisher.

The city was the only UK entry to be named in the top 10 destinations by DK's Eyewitness travel guide.

The West Country city joins Buenos Aires, Washington DC, Copenhagen and Cape Town in the list.

The guide said it offered a high-quality shopping experience and praised its achievements in making the shortlist for "European green capital".

Helen Holland, council leader, said: "It confirms what Bristolians already know, that it's a great place to live, work and enjoy."
