She failed to turn up at work three days later, police said. The 38-year-old South African woman failed to turn up at the hospital three days later.
Officers said the disappearance of the 38-year-old, who is South African, was "very much out of character" and expressed concern for her safety. Ms Makola was discovered by police officers in Airdrie at noon on Boxing Day. An inquiry is under way into the circumstances of her disappearance.
Lothian and Borders Police also said Ms Makola's car - a red Vauxhall Astra bearing the registration Y295 SRS - has been driven in the Airdrie area and on the M8 motorway since she disappeared. A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "At the moment this enquiry is at its very early stages, and we need to establish the exact circumstances of how Magdeline came to be where she was.
Officers have urged anyone with information on the nurse - described as black, 5ft 3ins tall with a thin build and black hair - to contact them. "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen Magdeline since she went missing, to contact us. Anyone with any other information that can assist our enquiries should also get in touch."
