Sisters make grade at university
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/england/7801336.stm Version 0 of 1. Two sisters from Teesside have proved there is no age barrier to learning. June Thomas, 43, and Sheila Smith, 53, both grandmothers from Middlesbrough, wanted to widen their horizons and have graduated from Teesside University. Ms Thomas has completed an HND in computer studies, and her sister has earned a diploma in nursing studies. Both came to the university to seek a new direction and qualifications. Ms Thomas is now studying for a BSc in computer studies at Teesside. Mother-of-two Ms Smith, who is now working with children with learning disabilities, said: "I had been working as a care assistant for 18 years and wanted to develop my career opportunities further. I felt the time was right as my children were grown up. So positive "I enjoyed the learning experience at the university and also meeting new people." Ms Thomas said: "Everyone at the university is so positive and they give you the confidence to believe in yourself. "I believe I can achieve almost anything, that's why I've gone on to do my degree. There are no barriers at the University of Teesside, they see the person you are and your capabilities, not age, not disabilities, not anything, just you." The family link is continuing with Ms Thomas' daughter Leigh, 27, who is now studying for a history degree at Teesside. |
