The magnitude-6.4 tremor struck 34km (21 miles) north-west of the capital, Tirana, as people slept in their beds during the early hours of Tuesday. Using sniffer dogs, they are sifting through rubble, 36 hours after the magnitude-6.4 tremor.
Whole families have perished - and thousands are staying out in the open as powerful aftershocks hit.

Some 500 shocks have been felt since the initial quake hit at 03:54 local time (02:54 GMT) on Tuesday. Search teams have arrived from a number of European countries to help find survivors. It struck 34km (21 miles) north-west of the capital, Tirana, as people slept in their beds during the early hours.
More than 40 people have been pulled from the rubble and Prime Minister Edi Rama promised that rescuers would "continue to search patiently and thoroughly to the end". The latest aftershock - a magnitude 5.6 - is said to have damaged a building in Durres next to one where intense rescue efforts are under way.
The government has declared Wednesday a day of mourning. More than 45 people have been pulled from the rubble and Prime Minister Edi Rama has promised that rescuers will "continue to search patiently and thoroughly to the end". He said all those affected would be sheltered in hotels until the government rebuilds their homes.
The European Commission said it had deployed rescue teams from Italy, Greece and Romania to help with the search efforts, while teams were also sent from Kosovo and Montenegro. A day of mourning is being observed in Albania and neighbouring Kosovo.

How bad was the quake? Tuesday's quake caused considerable damage in Thumane and Durres, where entire blocks of flats collapsed. Local media report that at least 20 people are buried under the rubble.
The 6.4 magnitude tremor was followed by powerful aftershocks. Teams from Italy, Greece, Romania, France, Switzerland, Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Israel are helping with the search efforts.
In Thumane, a five-storey apartment building collapsed. The largest deployment has come from the Kosovo Security Forces (KSF). Pictures show a large column of KSF vehicles arriving. The troops are specially trained to help with natural disasters.
Dulejman Kolaveri, a man in his 50s, said he feared his 70-year-old mother and six-year-old niece were trapped inside because they had lived on the top floor. Kosovo has also sent police to Albania to help maintain law and order.
"I don't know if they are dead or alive," he told AFP news agency, his hands shaking. "I'm afraid of their fate. Only God knows." In Thumane, rescuers are combing the rubble of a five-storey building.
