Kevin Dowd’s Defense of President Trump

Version 0 of 1.

To the Editor:

Maureen Dowd’s brother, explaining why he supports President Trump (“Kevin Talks Turkey,” column, Dec. 1), begins the litany of reasons with “I support the president for his economy, the jobless rate …” From what I hear, that view is not only to be expected from Mr. Trump’s immovable supporters but also, I fear, from so many who are undecided about whom they’ll vote for.

What bothers me a lot is that there’s so little effort by the Democratic candidates and like-minded others to correct the false impression that the low jobless rate is President Trump’s doing. It is rather a continuation from 2009, when it began declining soon after President Barack Obama’s massive economic stimulus took effect, turning back the Great Recession and perhaps preventing a depression. Is that so hard to tell people?

To the Editor:

Yes, yes, it’s all very well and good to print a conservative’s view of liberals, of politics, of Hillary. But then at the end of the fun comes the portrayal, as usual, of people concerned with the climate crisis as tsking schoolmarms ruining everyone’s fun by asking them to “consider curbing ‘the carbon footprint’ of our turkeys and travel.”

I am really sick of this. Grow up and read a United Nations climate report, will you? I didn’t invent the science in order to “turkey-shame” you.

Republicans like to snicker at Democrats for getting their “panties in a knot,” but ignoring science is turning them into the party that is increasingly out of touch.

To the Editor:

Like his sister Maureen, Kevin Dowd writes with wonderful vigor. While I disagree with him heartily in his support of Donald Trump, it is refreshing to read commentary from “the other side” that is rational and not terrifying. I would welcome more of the same.

To the Editor:

The annual column by Maureen Dowd’s brother so deftly avoids the “big issues” — the sheer inhumanity of the Trump administration. Thousands of children separated from their families at the border. Tax cuts resulting in a huge budget deficit, leading to cuts in safety net programs. Glorifying war criminals and white nationalists. Abandonment of the Kurds. And gross disrespect for the Constitution. Shameful and terrifying.

To the Editor:

Please let Maureen Dowd know that we’ll set a place for her at our Thanksgiving table next year, with not one Donald Trump apologist in sight.
