The weeks in between were filled with sounds both familiar and foreign. The year began with the same fights as in 2018, including a federal furlough that stretched into the longest government shutdown in history. There were also new voices. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand gained international attention when she responded to a massacre in Christchurch by banning assault rifles within days of the shooting. Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old from Sweden, called for dramatic climate action, inspiring a chorus of students to do the same through school strikes around the world. And protesters on multiple continents demanded reform, ultimately toppling heads of state in the likes of Bolivia and Lebanon and sparking a political reckoning in Hong Kong and Chile. There were also new voices. Our reporters and producers went to Europe to explore the rise of populism across the European Union; traveled along the Mexican border to understand the human toll of America’s immigration policy; and evaded surveillance in China’s Xinjiang Province to reveal the truth about the government’s detention camps — from a woman who survived them.“The Daily” was there for all of it, covering the conflict, color and controversy that defined the year. Spliced in between were the mysterious tale of a royal family in the jungle of Delhi; audio portraits of the newest representatives in the House and the top democratic candidates for president; and a series that challenged the origin story of the United States by centering African-Americans in a narrative that has long excluded them.Spliced in between were the mysterious tale of a royal family in the jungle of Delhi; audio portraits of the newest representatives in the House and the top democratic candidates for president; and a series that challenged the origin story of the United States by centering African-Americans in a narrative that has long excluded them.
