US President-elect Barack Obama's daughters have started their first day of school in Washington DC.

Malia and Sasha are attending Sidwell Friends, a private Quaker school in Washington's north-western suburbs.

Sasha, 7, will be going to Sidwell's elementary school campus, while Malia, 10, will attend its middle school.

The Obama family moved to the US capital on Sunday, so that the girls could start at the school on its first day back after the winter break.

They will be living at the Hay Adams Hotel until Mr Obama is sworn in as president on 20 January, when they will move into the White House.

President Bill Clinton's daughter Chelsea also attended Sidwell Friends when her father was in the White House.
