Insp Phil Baker, of Northumbria Police, said: "This is very serious incident which has sadly resulted in the death of a man. "I didn't know what had happened so I ran downstairs and saw the front door was wide open - well it had come off," he said.
"I had to remove part of the railing because it was in my passage and there was something smoking just outside the door and that was part of the engine."
