Officer-involved shooting reported in Prince George’s, police say Officer kills handcuffed suspect in struggle, Prince George’s, police say
(about 1 hour later)
Prince George’s County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday evening in Temple Hills. A Prince George’s County police officer shot and killed a handcuffed suspect during a struggle in a police cruiser Monday night in the Temple Hills area, police said.
A person shot by an officer was taken to a hospital, said Cpl. Kyndle Johnson, a spokeswoman for the county police. No information about their condition was immediately released. The shooting happened around 8 p.m. on Winston Street near the intersection with St. Barnabas Road.
The shooting occurred on Winston Street, according to police. A woman living on the street said the incident was near the intersection with St. Barnabas Road. Police had gone to the scene after an incident in which a motorist struck several vehicles.
The site is a two-block residential street of single family houses. A male suspect was taken into custody and placed in a cruiser, said Cpl. Kyndle Johnson, a police spokeswoman.
This is a developing story and will update. Johnson said police thought the suspect may have been under the influence of PCP, a powerful drug that can lead to violent behavior, and were waiting for a drug recognition officer to reach the scene.
At some point, she said, a struggle broke out inside the cruiser and the suspect was shot.
“Witnesses saw a struggle inside the vehicle,” Johnson said, “and heard multiple bangs.”
The suspect was taken to a hospital where he died.
Neither the name or age of the suspect were immediately available.
The officer was not identified by police.
The site of the shooting is a two-block residential street of single-family homes.
