UK Jews demand Israeli ceasefire Thousands rally for peace in Gaza
(about 7 hours later)
A number of prominent British Jews have written an open letter calling on the Israeli government to halt its military operations in Gaza immediately. A pro-Israel rally has arrived at Trafalgar Square to call for peace in Israel and Gaza, as well as recognition of Israel's view of the conflict there.
The letter, published in the Observer, warns the military action, far from improving security, will strengthen extremism and destabilise the region. Organisers told the BBC they want both Gaza and Israel to be free, but that they believe people are downplaying the rocket hits against Israel.
The signatories, who declare themselves "passionate supporters of Israel", include several rabbis. Police said they estimated 4,000 people are at the event in central London.
The first major rally in support of Israel in the UK will take place later. It comes after prominent British Jews wrote an open letter calling on Israel to halt operations in Gaza.
'Not disproportionate'
The organisers of the rally have called for a sustained ceasefire and an end to all violence in the region.
They said the number of Israeli deaths should not be considered disproportionate to the number of Palestinian deaths because Israelis were lucky enough to escape their houses before they were hit by Palestinian rockets.
A small group of pro-Palestinian protesters were being kept separate from the main body of the rally by mounted police.
Meanwhile the letter, published in the Observer, warns the military action, far from improving security, will strengthen extremism and destabilise the region.

In Gaza three Palestinians have been killed and dozens more injured by new Israeli tank fire and air strikes, according to medical sources.
Reports of the deaths came hours after Israel dropped leaflets warning Gazans to stay away from areas used by Hamas, saying its operation would escalate.
Some 820 Gazans and 13 Israelis have reportedly died in 14 days of fighting.
