Chinese police have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering eight people in one night, state media have reported.

The suspect, said to be a 35-year-old junk collector, is alleged to have killed a 43-year-old widowed grandmother who spurned his advances.

He is also alleged to have killed her grandson and three other women and three men who worked for him.

Six of the bodies, as well as bloody axes and hammers, were allegedly found at his junkyard in Hubei province.

The man was arrested on Sunday in Wuhan, capital of Hubei province in central China, the official Xinhua news agency said.

He had initially fled after the attacks on 4 January, but returned to Wuhan where he was recognised by an informant who called the police.

The grandmother and her two-year-old grandson were both killed by blows to the head in the apartment they shared in Luoyang, in Hubei, where their bodies were found, police said.

The bodies of the six employees, aged 45 to 69, were found at the suspect's junkyard.
