Speaking to a crowd of more than 6,000 in downtown Detroit on Friday, Sanders continued to assail Biden for voting for the war in Iraq and trade deals, including the North American Free Trade Agreement, which he said had cost millions of American jobs in Michigan and other battleground states. Meanwhile Biden reportedly launched his biggest advertising blitz yet, $12m on ads in key states voting on the next two Tuesdays, chiefly Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Florida, Ohio and Illinois.
“Now, if we are going to defeat Trump in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, it will be very hard for a candidate who voted for these disastrous trade deals,” Sanders said. At a rally in St Louis on Saturday afternoon, Biden pledged: “We’re going to unite this party and unite this country.”
“I saw trade policies like Nafta ... as attacks on the working people of this country,” said Sanders, noting that Biden supported the mid-1990s trade deal as a US senator from Delaware. ‘I didn’t believe then and I don’t believe now on asking American workers to compete with (those) in Mexico and China who make a starvation wage.” He thanked former Democratic rivals who have very recently dropped out, and also unexpectedly thanked supporters of former 2020 rival Kamala Harris, fueling speculation that the California senator might be about to endorse him.
