The anticipated opening of Canada next month to vaccinated residents of the United States will certainly affect many summer plans. A patchwork of recommendations for travel to Europe remains in place despite the European Union adding the United States to its “safe list” of countries this month. Its 27 members decide independently when and how to lift the ban on nonessential travel for U.S. visitors. The bloc’s safe list also applies to Europe’s border-free Schengen Zone, which includes non-E.U. countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Lichtenstein.A patchwork of recommendations for travel to Europe remains in place despite the European Union adding the United States to its “safe list” of countries this month. Other C.D.C. travel recommendations differ for those who are fully vaccinated and those who aren’t. People who are vaccinated are still at possible risk for getting and spreading virus variants, so the C.D.C. advises that in addition to the mandatory test to board the return flight, they also get tested three to five days after they return to the United States. However, the C.D.C. says they don’t need to quarantine unless they receive a positive result. Those wanting to learn about the coronavirus risk in a specific country can visit the C.D.C. website where a four-tier ranking system provides guidance. For information on entry requirements like testing and quarantine, as well as curfews and movement restrictions, the State Department’s website offers detailed information by country. In April, it reclassified 80 percent of the world’s countries as “Level 4: Do Not Travel” to reflect the unpredictability and evolving threat posed by the pandemic. Those wanting to learn about the coronavirus risk in a specific country can visit the C.D.C. website where a four-tier ranking system provides guidance.
