A man is in a serious condition after being shot in the head in the south side of Edinburgh.

Police said the 26-year-old was discovered unconscious in Hazelwood Grove at about 0600 GMT on Saturday by a member of the public.

He was taken to hospital where his condition was described as "stable but serious".

Officers have cordoned off the area for forensic examinations and police patrols have been stepped up.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said shootings were "extremely rare" in the city and any risk of harm to the general public was small.

"This is an extremely serious incident, and we are currently at the very early stages of our enquiries," he said.

"We are anxious for any information that can assist us, and we want anyone who was in the area of Hazelwood Grove at around 6am, and saw or heard anything suspicious, to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone with any other information that can help us should also get in touch."
