A murder inquiry has been launched after a man found shot in the head on an Edinburgh street has died.

Police said the 26-year-old was discovered unconscious in Hazelwood Grove at about 0600 GMT on Saturday by a member of the public.

He was taken to the Western General Hospital where he died overnight. His name has not yet been released.

Forensic examinations have been taking place and an incident room has been set up in Leith.

A police spokesman said: "We remain anxious to speak to anyone who may have any information that can help our inquiries, in particular anyone who may have seen the victim in the hours before he was shot."

The dead man was about 5ft 9ins tall, stocky with dark hair and was wearing a grey hooded Nike top with the words 'Just Do It' in pink lettering on the front, black tracksuit trousers, and white trainers.

About 70 officers were working on the case but Lothian and Borders Police stressed they believed it was an isolated incident and that crime like this were rare in the city.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to contact police or call Crimestoppers.
