Rule change
Two acts that have received some of the biggest critical acclaim over the past 12 months have been made ineligible for nominations because of a change in award rules.
Previously artists were eligible to be nominated if they have had a single or album in the UK top 75, but this year it has been changed to the top 40.
This means that Mercury Prize-nominated Laura Marling, who would have been in the running, will fail to get a mention as her album Alas I Cannot Swim only peaked at number 45.
Similarly, US singer Bon Iver, who featured in HMV's top 10 end of year poll of polls, reached number 42 with For Emma, Forever Ago and will also miss out.
The Pet Shop Boys will receive an outstanding contribution to music award at the ceremony.
