UK scientists are to begin testing a treatment it is hoped could counter the effects of Covid-19 in the most seriously ill. The drug involved is known to boost a patient's stock of T-cells - immune cells that clear infection from the body. Those with the most severe form of the disease have been found to have extremely low T-cell numbers. A University of Oxford trial that began in April is to be expanded to 10,200 people, taking in the over 70s and children aged five to 12. So far, 1,000 adults have taken part but those aged over 55 were previously ineligible. Trials of the same vaccine on monkeys appear to have given them protection against coronavirus.
