After the killings, investigators issued a nationwide law enforcement alert and zeroed in on Salem, Ore., as a destination where the two men might have fled. After monitoring the home where they believed the men were staying on Sunday, officials in the Marion County Sheriff’s Office followed the two men, arrested them after a traffic stop and took them into custody, said Mike Swafford, a spokesman for the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama. After the killings, investigators issued a nationwide law enforcement alert and zeroed in on Salem, Ore., as a destination where the two men might have fled. Mr. Legg and Mr. Rogers were identified as suspects early in the investigation, Mr. Swafford said. He said the authorities had been called in the past to the house in Valhermoso Springs, Ala., where the killings took place to respond to complaints related to drugs and other issues. Mr. Swafford said Mr. Legg, Mr. Rogers and three of the seven victims were part of a club called the Seven Deadly Sins, which he did not describe in detail beyond saying that it did not have connections to other clubs or a larger entity. He said one of the motives in the shootings might have been to end the club. Money and drugs also probably played a role, he said, adding that he could not provide further details because the investigation remained active.Mr. Swafford said Mr. Legg, Mr. Rogers and three of the seven victims were part of a club called the Seven Deadly Sins, which he did not describe in detail beyond saying that it did not have connections to other clubs or a larger entity. When the police arrived at the scene of the shootings, a back bedroom in the house — a single-level, ranch-style residence — was on fire, but Mr. Swafford said at the time that the fire was not being investigated as a cause of the deaths. When the police arrived at the scene of the shootings, a back bedroom in the house — a single-level, ranch-style residence — was on fire, but Mr. Swafford said at the time that the fire was not being investigated as a cause of the deaths.
The authorities found the victims’ bodies strewn around the house with multiple gunshot wounds. The victims’ cellphones had been taken, according to an affidavit that was filed to obtain felony arrest warrants.
A woman who was in contact with Mr. Legg and Mr. Rogers told investigators that they became upset with members of the club on the night of the shooting over the theft of several of Mr. Legg’s firearms.
The woman said Mr. Legg and Mr. Rogers told her that “the ‘club’ would be dismantled by the end of the night,” according to the affidavit.
