Hillwalkers search is under way Hillwalkers found safe and well
(about 4 hours later)
Rescuers have started to search for two hillwalkers who went missing overnight in the Highlands. Two walkers who spent the night in atrocious weather conditions in the Cairngorms have been found safe and well.
The pair were reported missing at about 2000 GMT on Wednesday when they failed to return from the trek on the Cairngorm Plateau. The men, who are 22 and 29, were reported missing at about 2000 GMT on Wednesday when they failed to return from a trek on the Cairngorm Plateau.
Weather conditions were said to be bad in the area, with freezing temperatures and heavy snow. Mountain rescue teams, search dogs and the RAF were involved in searches for the pair in the Highlands.
An RAF helicopter, police and Cairngorms mountain rescue joined the search at first light on Thursday. They were spotted by an RAF helicopter crew at about 1100 GMT.
The men were airlifted to Glenmore Lodge outdoor training centre, near Aviemore. It is not known if they required medical attention.
Police said the 29-year-old was Marcus Scott, a chef who works in Aviemore. His companion, who is from Inverness, has asked not to be identified.
Freezing temperatures
Northern Constabulary said: "Police can confirm that two men reported missing in the Cairngorms last night have been found.
"They were picked up a short time ago on the hill by Rescue 137 from Kinloss. The men are both alive but their condition is not known at this time."
Concerned family members raised the alarm on Wednesday night after they failed to return from their trip as planned. The Highlands experienced heavy snow falls and freezing temperatures overnight.
An earlier attempt by the RAF helicopter crew to join Thursday morning's search was thwarted by bad weather.
Those involved in the search included members of Strathclyde Police Mountain Rescue Team, who were training in the area, along with 21 members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team, 10 from RAF Kinloss Mountain Rescue Team and four Search and Rescue Dog Association dogs and their handlers.
