Tom Meighan: Ex-Kasabian singer due in court on assault charge Tom Meighan: Ex-Kasabian singer admits ex-fiancee assault
(about 2 hours later)
Ex-Kasabian singer Tom Meighan is due in court to face a charge of assault, a day after he left the band he had fronted for the last 23 years. Former Kasabian singer Tom Meighan has pleaded guilty to assaulting his former fiancee.
On Monday, the group said Mr Meighan, 39, had stepped down in order to deal with "personal issues". The 39-year-old admitted at Leicester Magistrates' Court attacking Vikki Ager on the evening of 9 April.
He later tweeted: "I just wanted to let you all know that I am doing well. I'm in a really good place now." The court heard a child had witnessed the assault and contacted 999 to report that a "domestic incident was taking place".
Mr Meighan is due to appear at Leicester Magistrates' Court, accused of assault by beating in April. On Monday, the group announced Meighan had stepped down from the band in order to deal with "personal issues".
Mr Meighan's departure from Kasabian leaves guitarist Serge Pizzorno and bassist Chris Edwards as the only remaining founding members. Prosecutor Naeem Valli said the "sustained assault" had left Ms Ager with bruises to her knees, elbow, ankle and "a reddening around her neck".
The band's current drummer Ian Matthews joined the group in 2004. The court was told Meighan "smelt heavily of intoxicants" as he assaulted her.
The group has enjoyed success as one of England's biggest rock bands, with five of their six albums going to number one. They headlined the Glastonbury Festival in 2014 and won best British band at the 2010 Brit Awards. Meighan, of Narborough, originally denied an assault had taken place but after watching video footage, he told police he could not watch it any further because it was "horrible".
It is not clear whether Kasabian will seek a new lead vocalist. Mr Valli told the hearing the child "sounded panicked and afraid" while making the call and the victim could be heard saying "get off me, get off me".
He added officers described Ms Ager as being "visibly upset" while Meighan was said to be acting "aggressive" and unwilling to co-operate.
He is due to be sentenced later.
