Even as many countries remain off-limits to American visitors because of the high rate of coronavirus within the United States, others have started to welcome, and in some cases woo, U.S. citizens to come spend their tourist dollars. Still, would-be vacationers generally face a host of conditions and a lot of traveler beware. On Aug. 6, the U.S. State Department revoked the global “Do Not Travel” warning it put in place in March, saying it was returning to country-specific advisories so that Americans could make informed travel decisions. Many places, however, continue to bar travelers from the United States amid pandemic fears.
The U.S. State Department continues its Global Level 4 Health Advisory, which cautions against international travel because of the pandemic. However, it is also posting country-specific information as restrictions loosen. Even within federal agencies there appeared to be some discrepancies that could be confusing to travelers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which uses only three levels for country advisories, listed some places, including Fiji, New Zealand and Bonaire, as Level 1, saying visitors should practice usual precautions. The State Department, however, uses a four-tier system and listed Fiji and New Zealand as Level 2 for “Exercise Increased Caution,” and Bonaire as Level 3 for “Reconsider Travel.” Additionally, none of those countries was open to U.S. travelers in early August.
The government’s action came despite the World Health Organization announcing during the first week of August that more than 18.5 million coronavirus cases have been reported worldwide and 700,000 people have died.
The State Department acknowledged that the spread of the coronavirus was “potentially” increasing in some countries, and decreasing in others.
“We continue to recommend U.S. citizens exercise caution when traveling abroad due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic,” the State Department said on its website.
