Overnight on Thursday, the conflict continued, with federal agents and protesters vying for control of a newly erected fence around the court building. Dozens of federal agents lined the block, firing heavy amounts of tear gas and munitions into the crowd. Protesters threw the tear gas canisters back, and some used leaf blowers to return the fumes, at one point forcing the agents to retreat.At least one protester was arrested before crowds dispersed in the early hours of Friday morning. Overnight on Friday, a group of military veterans joined the front lines. The veterans said they were there to make sure federal officers did not infringe on the free speech of protesters, who numbered in the thousands.
The “Wall of Vets” is the latest group to show solidarity with protesters on Portland. A “Wall of Moms” has grown to include hundreds of women in yellow shirts linking arms. A “Wall of Dads” in orange shirts has included some with leaf blowers used to push tear gas away from the crowds. Many nurses on Saturday showed up in blue scrubs.
